Design: Teaching Grade 8s Design and Marketing

Volunteering to give a fifteen-minute talk about what a graphic designer does is easy. Building a four-week curriculum for a split grade 7/8 class and actually teaching it is a different project entirely. In this program, students worked in small groups on two projects: brand analysis and brand guidelines. They learned to spot inconsistencies in branding and understand why it matters. What surprised me was how quickly these Grade 8 students grasped the difference between “a logo” and “a brand.” Their excitement about brand consistency reminded me that good design is a teachable skill, not just for those with design degrees.
